App Development with Ruby & Rails
Nathaniel Brown | Lisbon, Portugal

Ruby on Rails is a framework that has captured the attention of the industry. Whether you are a developer or a architect, Rails is a framework which magnifies your energy to maximize results and reduce clutter. With the key philosophy of the framework being less is more, Rails is centered around writing less code to produce more results. Turning 80% of the time you are currently utilizing on repetitive tasks and minimizing them down to the 20% giving you back the majority of your time to do customizations that separate your application from the next.
Presenter
Nathaniel Brown has been developing web applications for over ten years. Specializing in all forms of web and application, he continues to build web applications that fuel some of the worlds largest organizations and government agencies.
Nathaniel founded Inimit Innovations Inc. in 2003 which is a custom software development firm specializing in Open Source technology. In addition to providing web development solutions, he runs Open Source Events which most recently held the sold-out Canada on Rails conference, being the first Ruby on Rails conference in the world.
Recently Nathaniel released the highly utilized DateBocks engine which aids users with an intuitive input for entering in dates.
Outline
This workshop will get you into Rails at light speed. Walking you through building an application with all of the keystones of the framework being touched upon. The result - you will gain a well rounded perspective of how the Rails framework can help you save time, be more productive, and focus on writing the lines of code that truly matter, and letting Rails handle the rest.
From generating your first app, understanding the directory structure, to using migrations, customizing the routes, creating a few database tables, using the has_many and belongs_to relationships.
Attendees are highly encouraged to bring a laptop (either Windows or OSX) with Rails 1.1.6 pre-installed along with Ruby 1.8.4. And either MySQL or PostgreSQL installed.
Venue
The conference will be held at the rectory building (or the ChancellorŐs Office) of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
Located in Campolide, on one of the seven hills of Lisbon, the ChancellorŐs Office of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa houses the management, administration and welfare services of the University.
Designed by architects Manuel Rocha Aires Mateus and Francisco Xavier Rocha Aires Mateus, the building was awarded the Portuguese Valmor Prize for Architecture in 2002.
